Lisbon has endless places to grab a drink or bite to eat. As of 2021, there were 4,385 registered restaurants within the city. It would take 274 days to eat your way consecutively through Lisbon's restaurant scene, and that's if you were to plan an 8-hour break for sleep! With that being said, there are a ton of spots I need to check out, but here are my top to date!
Time Out Market: This is not your average food court. This establishment hosts the best restaurants in all of Lisbon. You may have seen Time Out Market in several cities, but did you know its origin story resides in Lisbon? Well, it technically started in London as a publication company, but the first market opened in Lisbon. If you are only in town for a short period and want to experience as much cuisine as possible, this is your spot. This open-concept food hall, which is only a few blocks from Praça do Comércio and a step off the Cais do Sodré train station, hosts 28 of the best local restaurants, 8 bars, a music venue, and even several shops. If you're with a large group you'll be able to find something to satisfy everyone's palate here.
Rossio Gastrobar: This eclectic rooftop restaurant overlooks the famous Rossio Square and sits atop the swanky Atlis Avenida Hotel. Fancy cocktails? Check. Great Food? Check. Beautiful City Views? Check. Indoor/Outdoor seating? Check. Check. Check. Check. If you want a night out experience (that won't even break your budget!) this is the place to go.
Tapa Bucho: Located in the buzzing Bairro Alto neighborhood, this is the perfect spot to stop for a bite before heading out on the town to experience some of Lisbon's famous nightlife. All I have to say is, OMG YUM!!! I definitely had to unbutton my jeans after this dinner. If you're not familiar with tapas - they're small shareable plates typically associated with Spain (but popular throughout much of Europe). Highly recommend any variation of their croquettes. Their pork belly dish also cannot be missed.
Pharmacia Felicidade: Now this place is unique. Who would ever think of going to a pharmacy-themed restaurant (other than on Halloween, maybe)? Let me tell you, somehow this place makes it work, and it is cool. Grab a delightful meal here, or even just a cocktail on the expansive patio overlooking the city. Don't forget to stop by the Pharmacy Museum on your way out!
Restaurante Ponto Final: Okay, I must confess, I haven't actually been here, but it was featured on Somebody Feed Phil and I've been dying to go! It sits across from Lisbon in Almada - so you can enjoy your meal while looking across the Tagus River and taking in the views.
Bonus Not a place, but a food to try is the pastel de nata - a decadent custard-filled pastry that you'll find in every bakery - and there are a lot of bakeries in Lisbon! In my opinion, you can't go wrong with pretty much any bakery you visit.
